History

La Casa del Balam, also known as the “grandmother” of all hotels in Merida, began operations in 1970 becoming one of the oldest and most distinguished hotels in the city and the entire Yucatan Peninsula.
Don Fernando Barbachano pioneer of tourism in Yucatan, incorporated original details of what was his own mansion and his daughter Mrs. Carmen Barbachano also involved in the family business, chose to keep the original facade and called the hotel “La Casa del Balam” which literally means “The House of the Jaguar”, to honor the memory of his father who was referred to in this way for his visionary and sharp business mindedness.
Since the family was very devoted to the colonial period in which they lived, the hotel's décor was based on this era. Large dark wood furniture, rocking chairs and wrought iron accessories were characteristic of their fine selection. Doña Carmen even designed the handmade sinks that are still available in our bathrooms today. She decided to be involved in every detail because she wanted to provide a space that could be perceived as a home for newcomers; she longed to create a place where every detail could speak of the serene and peaceful ambiance of the city, and where friends could be made rather than just clients. The quiet elegance of our building will greet you from the moment you arrive. Carrara Italia marble floors, Moorish arches and a beautiful hand carved stone fountain frame the central garden making it the ideal place to enjoy. Mrs. Barbachano's love of art permeates the main lobby so exceptional antiques and pre-Columbian artifacts can also be seen in every corner.
The traditional atmosphere of the hotel radiates a cozy and familiar feeling difficult to find in the surroundings of this important and already cosmopolitan city. Therefore, when contemplating the beautiful interior of the facilities and experiencing the warm treatment of its staff, one can see that Doña Carmen achieved her desire for originality and authenticity in a quite exquisite way. Politicians, singers, musicians and many other important people have preferred the hotel since its inauguration.
Fernando Barbachano and his wife had Yucatan in their hearts and certainly their daughter did too, its history and traditions have been an essential part of their lives and identities and they all did their best to preserve them.
